Chalkboard Design

A chalkboard is an underrated brand tool. It stands in the entrance area, runs past a passer by as the first brand piece, and decides in two seconds whether someone stops or keeps walking. Anyone hanging a generic discount board there gives up a stage that much more expensive ad formats cannot reach. We design chalkboards and menu boards across Germany so they make the café or restaurant recognisable from ten metres, with hand lettering templates the service can rewrite daily.

What sets a good board apart

Hierarchy first. A board typically holds three information layers: a main offer, a recommendation or daily dish, and a price or call. We think the build so the main message lands in two seconds, without passers by having to read. Type sizes follow a clear logic: headline at least three times the body, price bold, recommendation in cursive handwriting. Nobody should have to look at the menu at the entrance.

We build the design template as a system in which logo, a constant ornament and the layout areas are fixed, while service swaps content daily. The hand lettering comes from the brand's type system so the board does not feel generic but reads as an extension of the brand design. A writing guide with ten to fifteen lettering examples ships with it, so service can keep the brand consistent even when the handwriting changes.

How the board fits the outdoor presence

The chalkboard belongs to the outdoor presence of the house and sits inside the same design system as storefront design and façade. It is also the tactile continuation of the food menu and should match it in type family, colour and tone. If a café branding is being developed in parallel, we plan the board as part of the opening package. A typical board project lands between €1,200 and €3,500, depending on number of boards, material and lettering effort. We name the range honestly before the proposal.

01

Legible while walking by

Size, contrast and lettering are chosen so the board gets read in passing, not only on stopping.

02

A template the service rewrites daily

We deliver a design template with clearly defined areas for daily offer, price and recommendation. Service writes the content in without reinventing the board every day.

03

Hand lettering that belongs to the brand

We design the lettering templates to match the brand type. No generic café board, but an extension of the brand design onto the chalk surface.

04

Material and mounting considered

Frame, size, material and mounting at the entrance or inside are recommended so the board stands in everyday use and the wind does not flip it over.

Frequently asked

A board template with layout system, hand lettering templates and a writing guide for the service typically lands between €1,200 and €3,500. With two or three boards in different sizes or a fixed printed variant it moves into the upper range.

We deliver a design template with clearly defined areas and a short writing guide with lettering examples. Service writes the board with standard chalk or chalk marker, the brand image stays recognisable even when handwriting changes.

Both have their place. Real chalk feels warm and flexible, can be rewritten daily and fits lively cafés. A printed board on MDF or acrylic with chalk look is maintenance free but inflexible. We recommend per service concept.

By default we deliver the template and writing guide. If a professional opening board with elaborate lettering is wanted, we connect you with letterers from the network or come for a day on site ourselves.

Yes. Cafés, bakeries and restaurants in every region of Germany are part of the normal project landscape. Briefings and layout rounds run entirely remote. Board materials ship directly from workshop or printer.
